For When You’re Really Scraping the Bottle of the Barrel
Parent Supervision Required
Blowing out birthday candles is really fun! Blowing out regular candles is too! Here is the game:
- Light a candle.
- Pick whose birthday it is.
- Sing Happy Birthday to that person.
- Let them blow out the candle.
- Start again.
My kids can do this over and over again. If there are only two children, sometimes we let one blow out the match and the other blow out the candle, then switch on the next turn. We often do this when we send a birthday video message as well. It feels more special if there is a candle blown out at the end.
Note: I often take down the closest smoke detector, if someone is sleeping, before doing this game. Blowing out candles over and over can create some amount of smoke.
Safety Note: I always emphasize that only adults are safe to light matches and at the end of the game, I put the matches and candles away where the kids can’t reach so they aren’t tempted to play with them alone.

Note: Make sure to break up the skewers before throwing them out, or you will end up with a hole in the bag and garbage water all over the bottom of your garbage bin.
