Another activity to kill time when the weather sucks.
Option 2: Fill balloons with warm water. Use permanent marker to make faces on them. Let the kids cuddle with their warm balloon “water babies.”
Make Your Own Kinetic Sand
Remember being a kid and helping with baking? My favourite part was pouring in the brown sugar and watching it keep the shape of the cup. So I decided to embrace that and have a Beach Day. Brown sugar actually feels a lot like Kinetic Sand. The rule was, you were allowed to lick your fingers, but not eat it by the spoonful. Actually, I never told Zach that it wasn’t just sand… He has a harder time controlling his impulses. This activity is one of my favourites to include in care packages. I just put in a bag of brown sugar and a few shells from a trip to Florida (that my parents took). Sometimes I add a medicine cup for a pale and a little spoon for a shovel.

Eventually we made it like a real beach by adding a bowl of water that little characters could dive into. I even cut a washcloth in half for beach towels. I wish I had gotten little drink umbrellas for them! I’ll include those in the next care package.

And what is a beach day without a dip in the water with your bathing suit? The beach umbrella and some awesome beach tunes (Feeling Hot Hot Hot, Follow the Leader – SOCA version, etc.) added a tropical feel. Next time I think I will try to find some little beach balls.

Balloon Type: These days there are specific water balloons you can buy at Canadian Tire or the Dollar Store, but for this, I actually prefer using real balloons. They are less likely to break when you don’t want them to.
Those Accordion Tubes
Note: Make sure to break up the skewers before throwing them out, or you will end up with a hole in the bag and garbage water all over the bottom of your garbage bin.
