Rethinking the Death of Jesus

Why did Jesus have to die?

This is another one of the big questions that started intruding into my mind after my son’s death. Jake and I played Mary and Jesus, at the Christmas Eve Service, in the church of my childhood. It felt like I really was Mary, travelling back to the place of my birth, then presenting my miracle baby for all to see. After Jake died, and the bigger questions started bothering me, I felt I needed to tackle this question, as well. Most of my questions started with, “If God is so great, then why…” (Fill in any number of questions about suffering and loss). But I think the question of Jesus’ death has been pondered by many of us at one time or another. Why did Jesus have to die for God to forgive us, when Jesus, himself, preached that God forgave us? And to my knowledge, he never said, “But that forgiveness only starts after I die!”

This sermon brings up many theories and perspectives that, I think, can start people on their journey to puzzle out which answers make the most sense to them.

Just the Sermon

The Whole Service (Hey, prayers and songs are awesome too!)
